Resin bound driveway colours, 18mm thickness and aftercare
Resin bound driveways get their colour entirely from natural kiln-dried marble, quartz, granite and flint aggregates — never artificial dye. For Irish homes, multi-tonal silver-grey granite, golden pea/quartz and warm autumn bronze blends are the most practical choices, trowelled at a minimum 18mm thickness for cars and 15mm for patios.
Choosing a blend that hides tyre marks, understanding 18mm vs 15mm depth, and looking after your driveway.

Choosing a natural stone blend for an Irish home
| Aggregate colour family | Suits best | Practical tip for driveways |
|---|---|---|
| Silver & platinum granite (light/mid grey with black fleck) | Modern white/grey render, anthracite windows and contemporary extensions | Choose a blend with a charcoal or black basalt fleck so rubber tyre marks don't show on pale silver stone |
| Golden quartz & harvest buff | Period red-brick homes, country bungalows, sandstone sills and rural entrances | Warm and bright year-round; multi-tone golden/brown pebbles camouflage fallen autumn leaves |
| Autumn bronze, cappuccino & terracotta | Cream render, pebble-dash, oak/rosewood doors and mature gardens | The most forgiving shade for everyday tyre traffic and country mud |
| Basalt charcoal & slate grey | Traditional stone houses or as a contrasting border / house number inlay | Often framed with a silver granite cobble or contrasting light resin border |
Why car driveways need 18mm trowelled depth
- 15mm depth (€60 to €90/m²): designed for pedestrian garden patios, side paths, steps and pool surrounds using 1–3mm and 2–5mm decorative aggregate.
- 18mm depth (€65 to €95–€95 to €140/m²): mandatory for domestic driveways where cars, SUVs and EVs turn and brake. That extra 3mm of resin-bound stone increases shear strength by over 25% so turning tyres cannot shear the surface.
- 20mm to 24mm depth: specified where heavy delivery vans, oil lorries or horseboxes regularly cross the entrance.
Curing times, jet-washing and everyday care
- Curing before use: walk on the surface after 6 to 8 hours; wait 24 to 48 hours before parking cars on a newly trowelled resin driveway.
- Avoid dry steering in the first week: keep the car rolling slowly when turning the steering wheel rather than twisting the front tyres on the spot.
- Jet-washing safely: you can pressure-wash a resin bound driveway with a flat fan nozzle (up to 150 bar) held 25–30cm from the surface using cold or warm water. Never use boiling water or a spinning turbo nozzle right against the stone.

Questions homeowners ask
Can I put rock salt on a resin bound driveway in frosty weather?
Yes. Cured polyurethane resin and natural quartz/granite are unaffected by winter rock salt, and because water drains straight through the permeable surface instead of pooling, black ice is much rarer than on non-porous concrete.
What happens if a utility company has to dig a trench across my resin driveway?
Because resin bound is hand-trowelled in batches, a cut trench can be reinstated with matching binder and the exact same aggregate blend — especially clean when neatly framed with aluminium or granite edging strips.
