Resin bound vs resin bonded: what is the difference?
Although the names sound nearly identical, resin bound and resin bonded are two completely different driveway systems. Resin bound mixes the stone and resin together first and hand-trowels a smooth, 18mm SuDS permeable carpet with zero loose stones; resin bonded paints a thin film of resin onto the ground and scatters loose gravel on top, leaving a rough, non-permeable surface.

| Feature | Resin bound (trowelled system) | Resin bonded (scatter-coat system) |
|---|---|---|
| How it is installed | Kiln-dried stones and clear UV resin are mixed in a forced-action mixer, then hand-trowelled smooth to 15mm–18mm | A thin coat of resin is squeegeed onto the base and dry stone is scattered on top; excess stone is swept off later |
| Permeability (SuDS) | 100% permeable — water drains straight through tiny open pores across the whole driveway | Non-permeable — water cannot pass through the sealed resin film underneath |
| Surface feel & loose stones | Smooth, flat, wheelchair- and buggy-friendly; every stone is encapsulated in resin | Rough sandpaper texture; top stones work loose under car tyres over time |
| Thickness | 18mm for driveways (15mm for patios) | Only 3mm to 6mm (one stone thick) |
| Lifespan | 15 to 25 years | 5 to 8 years before bald patches appear in wheel tracks |
| Guide cost in Ireland | €65 to €95/m² (overlay) · €95 to €140/m² (full build) | €40 to €60/m² (over existing base only) |
Why Irish homeowners choose resin bound over resin bonded
In Ireland's wet climate, a non-permeable scatter-coat surface creates sheet run-off and puddles, and winter frost quickly pries single surface-glued stones off the base when cars turn their steering wheels.
Because a resin bound surface is trowelled 18mm thick with every individual grain of marble or quartz fully coated in flexible polyurethane resin, the stones lock into a three-dimensional structural mat. Rainwater vanishes through the surface the instant it lands, there are no loose pebbles tracked into the hall or kicked up by lawnmowers, and snow or frost does not sit in puddles on top.

Questions homeowners ask
How can I check my quote is for resin bound and not resin bonded?
Make sure the written specification states '18mm hand-trowelled SuDS permeable resin bound system mixed in a forced-action mixer' — never 'scatter coat', 'broadcast gravel' or 'chip and resin'.
Is a smooth resin bound driveway slippery when wet or frosty?
No. Immediately after hand-trowelling the wet resin bound surface, the installer broadcasts a fine micronized crushed-glass anti-slip grit across the top. Once cured, the glass is invisible to the eye but gives high wet-weather grip for shoes and tyres.
