Resin bound driveway cost in Ireland

In Ireland, an 18mm UV-stable resin bound overlay on a sound existing tarmac or concrete base costs €65 to €95 per m², while a full excavation with a permeable stone sub-base, open-graded tarmac binder and 18mm resin bound surface costs €95 to €140 per m². For a typical 50 m² 2-car driveway, that works out at €3,250 to €4,750 for an overlay or €4,750 to €7,000 for a full dig-out.

Why sub-base condition is the biggest price factor

The resin bound wearing layer itself (the 18mm mixture of natural aggregate and clear two-part polyurethane resin) accounts for roughly half the cost of a full installation; the other half is ground preparation:

  • Sound existing tarmac or concrete (€65 to €95/m²): if your current driveway has no sinking, tree-root heave or crumbling edges, the crew power-washes the surface, repairs minor cracks, applies primer/tack coat as required, and hand-trowels 18mm of resin bound stone in a single day.
  • Lifting cobblelock, gravel or lawn (€95 to €140/m²): resin bound cannot be laid directly over loose gravel or block paving (the joints flex and mirror through as cracks). The crew excavates to 220–260mm, compacts Clause 804 or clean permeable stone, lays a 50–60mm open-graded tarmac binder course, and then trowels the 18mm resin bound layer.
  • Perimeter edging and ironwork (€450 to €1,400): resin bound needs a clean hard edge to trowel against — either an aluminium L-bead or a decorative granite cobble / brick border — plus recessed steel trays over manholes so the pattern runs uninterrupted across the drive.

What to ask for in your written resin quote

  1. Written confirmation of aliphatic UV-stable resin (never aromatic non-UV resin) at the manufacturer's full resin-to-stone ratio (typically 7 kg to 7.5 kg of resin per 100 kg of aggregate + sand).
  2. Trowelled depth: minimum 18mm on vehicular driveways (15mm is only suitable for pedestrian patios and paths).
  3. Kiln-dried graded aggregate blend: combining 2–5mm stone with 1–3mm fine stone and kiln-dried silica sand so the matrix locks tight without voids.
  4. Dry-weather installation guarantee: resin bound must never be mixed or laid in rain or on a damp base, as moisture makes polyurethane resin foam and turn milky white.

Questions homeowners ask

Why are some resin driveway quotes €45/m² while others are €85/m²?

Extremely low quotes almost always use cheaper aromatic (non-UV) resin, stretch the mix down to 10–12mm thickness instead of 18mm, or trowel straight over unprimed cracked concrete or block paving without an open-graded binder course.

What VAT rate applies to resin bound driveways in Ireland?

13.5%. Because a supply-and-install resin bound driveway is a permanent home improvement where materials account for less than two-thirds of the contract price, the 13.5% reduced construction VAT rate applies.
