What a resin bound driveway costs in Ireland
Our price guide per m² and by driveway size for 18mm UV-stable overlays, full SuDS permeable dig-outs, patios and borders.
| Job | Typical cost | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| UV-stable resin bound overlay (15mm–18mm hand-trowelled) | €65 to €95 per m² | Over a sound existing tarmac or concrete base |
| Full dig-out + permeable binder + 18mm UV resin bound | €95 to €140 per m² | Clause 804 sub-base + open-graded tarmac + 18mm resin bound |
| Resin bound patio or front path (15mm foot-traffic depth) | €60 to €90 per m² | Kiln-dried natural aggregate mixed in clear aliphatic resin |
| Typical 2-car driveway (50 m²) | €3,250 to €4,750 (overlay) · €4,750 to €7,000 (full permeable dig-out) | Seamless hand-trowelled finish with crushed glass anti-slip grit |
| 3–4 car driveway (80 m²) | €5,200 to €7,600 (overlay) · €7,600 to €11,200 (full permeable dig-out) | Popular for widening a front garden without puddles or loose gravel |
| Large detached driveway (130 m²) | €8,450 to €12,350 (overlay) · €12,350 to €18,200 (full permeable dig-out) | Lower per-m² rate on larger continuous pours |
| Aluminium or granite sett edging + recessed manhole trays | €450 to €1,400 | Neat perimeter stop-bead and inset trays filled with matching resin |
What's included
- Site inspection of the existing base, moisture and crack check, and measuring perimeter edging and manhole covers.
- On full dig-outs: excavation, geotextile membrane, compacted permeable stone sub-base and open-graded macadam binder course.
- Forced-action mixer batching of washed, kiln-dried natural marble/quartz aggregate with two-part aliphatic UV-stable polyurethane resin, hand-trowelled to 18mm on driveways (15mm on patios).
- Fine crushed-glass anti-slip broadcast, recessed manhole trays, waste removal and 13.5% construction VAT.
What pushes it up or down
- Overlay vs full permeable excavation. If you already have a sound tarmac or concrete driveway in good condition, a primed 18mm resin bound overlay (€65 to €95/m²) saves €1,500 to €4,000+ compared with digging out from scratch (€95 to €140/m²).
- UV-stable (aliphatic) vs non-UV (aromatic) resin. Always insist on aliphatic UV-stable resin. Cheaper aromatic resin turns dark yellow or patchy brown wherever wheelie bins, plant pots or parked cars cast a shadow.
- 18mm driveway depth vs 15mm patio depth. Driveways carrying cars, SUVs and EVs need an 18mm trowelled depth with 2–5mm and 1–3mm graded stone so the surface never cracks or delaminates under turning wheels.
- Edging and manhole covers. Granite cobble borders or aluminium L-trim (€450 to €1,400) give a crisp edge for the trowel to work against, and recessed trays hide ugly iron drain covers seamlessly.

Common questions before you book
How much does a resin bound driveway cost in Ireland?
An 18mm UV-stable resin bound overlay laid over a sound existing tarmac or concrete driveway costs €65 to €95 per m² (€3,250 to €4,750 for a typical 50 m² 2-car driveway). If your current surface is gravel, grass or sinking cobblelock and needs a full dig-out with a compacted Clause 804 sub-base and open-graded tarmac binder course, the full installation costs €95 to €140 per m² (€4,750 to €7,000 for 50 m²).
What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?
In a resin bound driveway, kiln-dried natural stones and clear polyurethane resin are mixed thoroughly in a forced-action mixer and hand-trowelled to a smooth, flat 18mm layer with tiny microscopic voids that let rainwater drain straight through. In resin bonded, resin is simply rolled onto the ground and loose gravel scattered on top — leaving a rough, non-permeable surface that sheds loose stones.
Can resin bound be laid over my existing concrete or tarmac driveway?
Yes, provided the tarmac or concrete is structurally sound with no sinking or rocking slabs. Monolithic concrete is pressure-washed, any cracks are chased and stitched with epoxy mesh, and an epoxy primer with broadcast sand is applied before trowelling 18mm of resin bound stone (€65 to €95/m²). Never lay resin bound directly over block paving (cobblelock), as the individual bricks move and crack the resin.
Will a resin driveway turn yellow or grow weeds in Ireland?
As long as your installer uses 100% aliphatic UV-stable polyurethane resin, it will not yellow in sunlight or leave dark shadow patches under parked cars. And because there are no sand joints like cobblelock, weeds cannot root from underneath — you simply sweep or rinse off wind-blown seeds twice a year.
Does a resin bound driveway need planning permission in Ireland?
Under Class 6 of the Planning and Development Regulations, surfacing a front garden over 5 m² is exempt from planning permission when the surface is porous or drains within the property curtilage. A full SuDS permeable resin bound build (18mm resin over open-graded tarmac and clean stone) drains rainwater directly through the driveway.
Is resin bound or SMA asphalt better for a large rural driveway?
Resin bound gives a decorative natural aggregate finish with zero loose gravel or puddles on suburban and detached homes up to 150 m². For very long rural avenues (200 m²+) or yards carrying farm tractors and heavy lorries, compare hot-rolled SMA asphalt and tar-and-chip prices on our sister guide at asphaltdriveways.ie.
