How much does a resin bound driveway cost in Ireland?
An 18mm UV-stable resin bound overlay laid over a sound existing tarmac or concrete driveway costs €65 to €95 per m² (€3,250 to €4,750 for a typical 50 m² 2-car driveway). If your current surface is gravel, grass or sinking cobblelock and needs a full dig-out with a compacted Clause 804 sub-base and open-graded tarmac binder course, the full installation costs €95 to €140 per m² (€4,750 to €7,000 for 50 m²).
What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?
In a resin bound driveway, kiln-dried natural stones and clear polyurethane resin are mixed thoroughly in a forced-action mixer and hand-trowelled to a smooth, flat 18mm layer with tiny microscopic voids that let rainwater drain straight through. In resin bonded, resin is simply rolled onto the ground and loose gravel scattered on top — leaving a rough, non-permeable surface that sheds loose stones.
Can resin bound be laid over my existing concrete or tarmac driveway?
Yes, provided the tarmac or concrete is structurally sound with no sinking or rocking slabs. Monolithic concrete is pressure-washed, any cracks are chased and stitched with epoxy mesh, and an epoxy primer with broadcast sand is applied before trowelling 18mm of resin bound stone (€65 to €95/m²). Never lay resin bound directly over block paving (cobblelock), as the individual bricks move and crack the resin.
Will a resin driveway turn yellow or grow weeds in Ireland?
As long as your installer uses 100% aliphatic UV-stable polyurethane resin, it will not yellow in sunlight or leave dark shadow patches under parked cars. And because there are no sand joints like cobblelock, weeds cannot root from underneath — you simply sweep or rinse off wind-blown seeds twice a year.
Does a resin bound driveway need planning permission in Ireland?
Under Class 6 of the Planning and Development Regulations, surfacing a front garden over 5 m² is exempt from planning permission when the surface is porous or drains within the property curtilage. A full SuDS permeable resin bound build (18mm resin over open-graded tarmac and clean stone) drains rainwater directly through the driveway.
Is resin bound or SMA asphalt better for a large rural driveway?
Resin bound gives a decorative natural aggregate finish with zero loose gravel or puddles on suburban and detached homes up to 150 m². For very long rural avenues (200 m²+) or yards carrying farm tractors and heavy lorries, compare hot-rolled SMA asphalt and tar-and-chip prices on our sister guide at asphaltdriveways.ie.
How long do I have to wait before driving on a new resin bound driveway?
You can walk on a newly trowelled resin bound surface after 6 to 8 hours in dry mild weather, and park cars on it after 24 to 48 hours once the polyurethane binder has reached full traffic cure.
Will oil drips or tyre marks stain a resin bound driveway?
Cured polyurethane resin coats every stone and resists petrol, diesel and engine oil. Fresh drips wipe or rinse off with warm soapy water and a stiff brush or flat-fan pressure washer.
Can a resin bound driveway handle heavy SUVs, electric cars and oil delivery lorries?
Yes, when laid to a full 18mm driveway thickness over a sound concrete slab or properly compacted Clause 804 sub-base and 60mm open-graded tarmac binder course.
Why must aggregate be 100% kiln-dried before mixing with resin?
Even a tiny amount of moisture in the stone reacts with liquid polyurethane resin during mixing, causing foaming, white clouding (blooming) and a weak bond. Reputable installers keep bagged kiln-dried stone under cover until it enters the forced-action mixer.
What temperature and weather are needed to lay a resin bound driveway in Ireland?
Resin bound surfacing must be mixed and hand-trowelled during a dry weather window with air and ground temperatures at 5°C or above and no rain forecast during the initial 4 to 6 hour set.
How do you edge a resin bound driveway against grass or flowerbeds?
Every open perimeter needs a solid stop edge for the trowel to work against — either a mortar-bedded granite cobble border (100×100mm or 200×100mm setts) or an 18mm extruded aluminium L-bead.
